Fire at the Girl Scout Camp

Main lodge at Camp Lakota burned

by Brian Bierman

At close to 1:00 PM, Theresa LeGault of Cuddy Valley noticed smoke rising from Camp Lakota, which is owned by the Girl Scouts.  She called the fire department and drove to the camp to alert Don Scott who was in his cabin on the grounds when the blaze started.  Both LeGault and Scott said no one was in the building.

The fire appeared to have started in the kitchen of the main lodge.  The first fire crew from our local 57 arrived on the scene at about 1:20. Stations 55, 56, 58, a couple trucks from LAFD and two more from the Forest service arrived a few minutes later.  Crews battled the blaze for over 40 minutes.  Most of the fire and building were gone by 2:00.  The cause is unknown at this point.

Don Scott of Camp Lakota said a group of Girl Scouts was scheduled to stay at the camp tonight.

How sad, I camped there when I was only 8.

I am so sad to hear this! I have been going to Camp Lakota for over 10 years with my daughter. So many wonderful memories!

You can burn down our house, but you can't burn down our spirit. We'll just tent it in 2010 and have twice as much fun.

I've camped here as a Girl Scout, worked here as a counselor, and brought my daughter here for Girl Scout camp as well. I cried when I saw the video, but I hope we'll be able to rebuild another lodge filled with love and fun.
