Free firewood for struggling families

by Brian Bierman

The new thrift store in town called "I Came to Believe" is right next to the Shelter on the Hill store on Mount Pinos Way.  Leslie Long, who runs the store, is heading up an effort to get firewood to families hit extra hard by our current economy.

Long noticed a big pile of oak and other wood near the dump in Lebec.  The wood was brought there by Mountain Community businesses and residents; possibly some of the oak trees cut down for the new library.  She contacted Supervisor Ray Watson and asked about giving that wood to families in need.  Watson put Long in touch with Kern County Waste Management and they gave the go-ahead to use it.

In addition to the county wood pile, Long has two more in Frazier Park.  Antioch Nursery in Lake of the Woods is also volunteering to supplement the supply.

Anyone in need of firewood and in financial straits can contact Leslie Long at 661-993-8079.

Long says she needs of some help too.  One of the firewood piles in Frazier Park needs to be completely enclosed and all that remains to finish the job is 1 or 2 chain link gates to cover a 10 foot span.  Anyone able to donate to meet this need should contact her at 661-993-8079.
