Shelter on the Hill gets a boost from high school students

by Candace Huskey

FMHS’s “Bridges to Academy” is a specially designed class to prepare selected 9th graders for upcoming academic and social demands.  It is intended to bridge the gap between the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program at Tejon Middle School  and the COMTEC Academy at Frazier Mountain High School.

Taught by Mrs. Marie Poland, the Bridges class is dedicated to teaching students organizational skills, personal responsibility, and accountability.

Earlier this year Bridges students decided to initiate a class community service project.  Working in cooperation with Shelter on the Hill: A Humane Society, the class got busy collecting recyclables at school, at home, and in the community.  Their goal was  to raise $500 to sponsor a dog kennel at the new animal shelter which is currently under construction.

However, if they were unable to reach it, they had a back up goal of sponsoring a “cat condo” for $250.

Working together, the students raised over $300 in six weeks.  Although disappointed at not achieving the original goal,  that amount enabled the students to realize their secondary goal and to reward themselves with some needed school supplies and a little pizza party.

Many thanks to Mrs. Poland for several trips to the recyclers in Bakersfield and to the 19 students of the “Bridges Class of 2010” for making it happen!
