Resignation from the MCMAC

by Brian Bierman

Linda MacKay was visibly upset when she read her letter of resignation at the MCMAC meeting on Tuesday 6/15.  Citing the approval of Frazier Park Estates and the structure of the MCMAC, she said the council looks like it is there to cooperate with Watson and she did not want to cooperate.

Many want a local body that has some teeth.  Chairman Steve Newman says the MCMAC is an information gathering entity and forum and as that it is valuable as long as the community participates.  The special meeting on the library oak trees seems to have shown the MCMAC's value.  It was informative and it was definitely a forum.

Before the MCMAC, the Town Council was an information-gathering body. The inability to hold a proper election, plus the upcoming MAC, ended it. Now the MAC is appointed, contrary to the structure of other MACs that are usually elected. The trouble is these bodies don't have any power, and this community has some real issues before it. Having a powerless, toothless body where one can go and vent is actually worse than having nothing at all, when you know you have nothing and can strive to make something real.

Linda's resignation was an act of honesty and integrity. It would be nice if the text of her resignation letter could be printed in full in the Mountain Daily News so that readers could fully understand the issues involved.

Linda MacKay is a lady with great integrity, honesty and boldness all qualities which server her well as a community advocate and activist. I am sorry to see her leave the MCMAC although I sympathize with her reasons and respect her courage. We need an independent group representing this community, one who is not beholding or under the control of any organization public or private. The MCTC had power, diversity and most importantly independence something you will never have with a MAC - there is just no incentive for any supervisor to have a group operating in his or her district with any kind of a voice which could undermine his/hers. Linda and I do not agree on many issues including the Frazier Mountain Estates of Tejon Mountain Village but I fully support her decision to resign.
