Benjamin McFarland, field representative for Congressman Kevin McCarthy, was at the Family Resource Center the morning of Thursday, August 13th ready to meet with the public, which will be a monthly event. I found him polite, approachable and well informed, making the time spent worthwhile.
I brought him several matters which he was able either to answer, or promise an answer shortly.
First, I simply conveyed my thanks to the Congressman for becoming a House sponsor of the Parental Rights Act. This legislation, if passed, will confirm the right of Americans to raise their children without being subject to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Next, I asked the status of the Defense of Marriage Act, and was told that it is presently in committee in Congress.
Next, I expressed my concern over all the crops that are dying, and farmers going out of business for lack of water, which is not being released in order to protect a tiny fish which is an endangered species. I was informed that the Congressman supports HR 3105, a measure also known as "Turn the Pumps On."
I asked about what is hopefully a rumor, that there is a bill before Congress that will allow the President to shut down the internet throughout America by declaring an emergency, without stating the nature of the emergency. Mr. McFarland had not heard of this (a good sign!) but promised to let me know about it. I hope to be told it is just a rumor!
We discussed the congressman's Health Care Town Hall which will take place on Wednesday, August 26, at 5:30 p.m. at Cal State Bakersfield. This will not be a ticketholders-only event. Everything possible is being done to ensure that everyone will be able to participate.
