Freeway Fire

'Tis the season

On Monday June 21st 2010 at approximately 3:14 P.M., the Kern County Fire Department responded to a wildland fire on the west side of Interstate 5, North of Fort Tejon State Park. Approximately 135 firefighters fought the fire including assistance from the US Forest Service, LA County and BLM. Water and fire retardant were applied from KCFD helicopter 408 and 2 Cal Fire air tankers

Upon arrival crews were faced with approximately ½ mile of burning vegetation on the west side of I- 5. The fire was traveling at a moderate rate of spread up hill through steep terrain and heavy vegetation towards structures in Digier Canyon.

A structure protection task force was ordered to protect the residents of Digier Canyon. Fire crews did a great job of containing the fire to approximately 40 acres and preventing any spread into the residential area. Crews will remain on scene throughout the night to ensure the fire is completely extinguished.

No structures were damaged by the fire and there are no reported injuries.  The cause of the fire is undetermined.
