Norton the Camel Visits Shepherd of the Hills

by Brian Bierman

Kids attending Vacation Bible School at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church met Norton the camel on Tuesday, 8/10. They learned a number of camel facts as they were taught the Bible story of Joseph; a son of Jacob (or Israel) that was sold into slavery in Egypt.  Joseph later became a high official in Pharoh's court; overseeing the storage of extra grain supplies during bumper crop years that were later followed by a near decade of famine.

Norton is a 15-year old Dromedary, an Arabian one-humped camel; one of 11 owned by Gentle Jungle in Lebec. He weighs about 1300-1400 pounds. Baby camels cost about $20,000-$30,000 a piece. He has been in many commercials and movies, including  Scorpion King and also Jarhead, a 2005 Gulf War film.

Gentle Jungle, generously donating Norton's time for the appearance, says that he is very good in church walking between the aisles and performing with the angels in Christmas plays. The handler, Scott Davis, says that Norton has not spit at anyone since he was a baby. Davis said that camels only spit and kick if they are threatened and that they have the ability to kick in any direction.
