From the Kern County Fire Department:
LEBEC, CA – Monday August 24, 2009 at approximately 11:45 A.M., a call was received by the Kern County Fire Department for a vegetation fire along the west side of Interstate-5 south of Fort Tejon Rd. Approximately 70 Kern County Firefighters responded to this incident assisted by Bureau of Land Management, Forest Service, Cal Fire, and Los Angeles County Fire Department. The fire started from a vehicle towing a trailer along Interstate 5 after the trailer separated from the vehicle sparking the nearby dry grass.
Upon arrival, the fire was fast moving in dry grass, spreading to the Lebec Acres community, immediately threatening approximately 15 homes. A strike team of engines were assigned to protect the homes while aircraft, hand crews, and patrols controlled the fire. The fire burned approximately 65 acres and is close to containment. Having the aircraft immediately available significantly reduced the threat to the nearby homes aiding in a quick containment of the fire. Crews will be on scene through the evening. No structures were damage [SIC] and no injuries have been reported.
Kern County Fire Department would like to take this moment to remind you to have 100 feet of clearance around your home reducing fire hazards.
