Four commission members were present and heard presentations by commission staff and Cornerstone Engineering for Falling Star Homes. Commission staff recommended the development be scaled back to 188 homes from the 662 proposed by the developer. Commercial aspects of the development were recommended to keep intact.
The Tri-County Watchdogs were out in force to voice their opposition. Eric Anderson, Mary Ann Lockhart, Linda MacKay and Katherine King of The Watchdogs presented arguments. Geologist Ken Hurst shared his educated opinion regarding potential negative impact on water supply for Frazier Mountain High School. Darren Hager, of the Lebec County Water District, argued that proposed water sources would be insufficient for the Falling Star project and may negatively effect the Lebec water supply.
Planning Commission members Ronald Sprague and Jeff Flores voted contrary to the staff recommendation and in favor of the full proposed development. Peter Belluomini and Leticia Perez voted with the staff recommendation to scale back the development in the interest of conservation and in support of existing regulation.
The project hearing started at 8:43 PM and finished at midnight. The planning commission will meet again on October 8 when they will have a full five-member group to vote.
