How this Site Counter Works

Each visitor is counted only once per day.  The count rolls; meaning if it says "171 in the past 24 hours", that's 24 hours to the minute.  If one reads the count at 2:03 PM on Monday, it's 171 visitors since 2:03 PM the day before.  Same with the weekly and monthly counts with the exception that a single visitor can be counted up to 7 times for a week or 31 times for a month.

How is this accomplished?

Every computer on the web has what is called an IP address that might look like "123.456.78.9" .  This is recorded with the current date & time when a visitor is counted to avoid duplicate counts.  So technically each computer is only counted once per day.  If more than one person uses the same computer to visit The Mountain Daily News, our count is under reported.
